If you’re reading this you must be considering becoming a Doula. Welcome – it’s an exciting thing to consider and we’re glad your taking time to think it through. We encourage you to explore what a Doula career entails so you can decide if this profession is the right one for you. It’s a career with great rewards, but can be challenging as well.
For most women, the desire to become a Doula is born out of a strong desire to work with families during this transformative time. Most women who are called to this work feel strongly in a woman’s right to experience the kind of birth they desire. Most birth Doulas would acknowledge having a strong intuitive sense as well as an ability to connect well with people during intense emotional times. Being a Doula requires you to be open to all types of families and all types of birth plans. As a Doula we are there to help women achieve the birth they desire, regardless of our own personal thoughts and ideas about what birth should be.
As a doula you have the privilege of being a witness to lifes’ most amazing transitions. We witness vulnerable moments, intense emotions both beautiful and challenging at times. Each birth changes us and has an impact on who we are as Doulas in future births.
Becoming a doula is not just a career but also a lifestyle. As a Doula you will have a great deal of responsibility and the demands on your life may feel heavy at times. Depending on how busy you chose to be, you may find you are almost always on call. It is important to consider the impact of this when deciding to become a Doula. You may want to ask yourself how this will impact your family, any other work you have or hobbies your committed to. Doula hours may be long, and are as unpredictable as labor is itself. Is this something that you can sustain in your life? We recommend discussing these concerns with your family and taking a good look at the resources you have to support what can be a challenging lifestyle. We are happy to help you look into this further as you make a decision. Please contact us today for a free consultation. We will connect you with an experienced Doula who can answer any questions you may have to help you make a decision.
Please also consider that becoming a Doula requires some understanding of running a business as well. Although hospitals are beginning to hire Doulas, most Doulas are in business for themselves. This means that you set your own fees, collect your own payments, market yourself, maintain your own website, handle taxes and all the other things that go along with owning a business. Kriya Birth Institute offers a great deal of training on these topics, but you will want to be sure this is in your comfort zone to some degree.
While you consider these things, please don’t hesitate to call us. We look forward to hearing from you!
